Ukraine has been elected to the UNESCO Executive Board

Today, November 7, at the 43rd session of the UNESCO General Conference held in Samarkand (Uzbekistan), Ukraine was elected to the UNESCO Executive Board for the 2025-2029 term. Russia dropped out of the race with the lowest result.

“I am grateful to our courageous delegation for every word and every step that contributed to this victory in Samarkand. My thanks go to the diplomats of the Permanent Mission of Ukraine to UNESCO and to the Embassy of Ukraine in Uzbekistan. Ukraine above all!” commented Olha Herasymiuk, Chair of the National Council, on today’s landmark event. She is participating in the work of the UNESCO General Conference as part of the Ukrainian delegation.

Ukraine’s key priorities as a member of the Executive Board:

  • protection of cultural heritage in situations of armed conflict and other emergencies;
  • ensuring universal access to education in times of crisis;
  • advancement of science in the interests of sustainable development;
  • safety of journalists and scientists;
  • combating climate change;
  • support for UNESCO’s global priority – Africa;
  • promotion of the development of small island states, gender equality, and youth initiatives.
